How analytical documentation is structured

Analytical documents generally identify the material tested, the identifier of the tested unit, the date of testing, the methods applied, and the results recorded against a stated specification.

Reading a document begins with matching identifiers. If the identifier on the document does not correspond to the unit in front of you, the document describes different material.

Methods sections describe the analytical technique applied. Terminology varies between laboratories, which is why documents should be read alongside the method description rather than in isolation.
