Testing terminology tends to fall into three groups: identity, description, and quantitative measurement. Identity confirms what a material is. Description records observable characteristics. Quantitative measures report values against a stated specification.
Specifications are set before testing. A result is meaningful only relative to the specification it was measured against.
Understanding this structure makes documentation easier to scan, and makes it clearer when a document does not contain the information you were looking for.
